Pop-ups, pull-tabs, and lift-the-flaps abound in this book's five spreads presenting information about the human circulatory and respiratory systems. Some pop-ups obscure text, requiring readers to bend (and weaken) them. The facts are accurate, but they're scattered around the pages, behind flaps, and under foldouts; there's little cohesion though a good deal of fun.

"What can this be in the foggy, foggy forest?" Using black silhouettes on vellum paper, Sharratt creates a fog-covered setting. Each spread reveals a surprise fairy-tale character, both well known (the Three Bears) and generic (a little elf). Sharratt's couplets hit a few flat notes, but readers will enjoy journeying through the fog as well as peering back at what they've uncovered.

Testing out his new telescope in the park, a little boy repeatedly spies what he thinks is a shark's fin--but each time a turn of the page reveals a more benign view: a cat's ear, a crow's wing, his dad's hair. A lively, bouncing text that skillfully incorporates repetition and rhyme; cheerful die-cut illustrations; and a twist at the end all add up to a terrific outing for young audiences.

When mischievous Tom finds a can of red paint, he decides to coat the entire living room and all its contents. After Mom calms down, the cleanup and redecorating ensues. This well-paced tale, working in conjunction with the cheery, vibrant illustrations, demonstrates the relative difference between seconds, minutes, hours, and to a lesser degree, a day, weeks, months, and years.
