Based on a screenplay written by Boaz Yakin and Sheldon Lettich. When Justin's older brother Kyle is killed in Afghanistan, Kyle's military working dog companion is sent to the family. Max is initially uncooperative and hostile in his new home, but Justin gradually earns Max's trust as they solve the mystery of Kyle's death. A novelization of the 2015 film Max, the story is predictable, but animal lovers will respond to its heart-rending (and -warming) moments.

Dog lovers who appreciated the first book about the search-and-rescue dog extraordinaire (Hero) will be happy to read this action-packed sequel. Though Hero is supposed to be retired, the recklessness of owner Ben and friends ensures that the pooch will be out in the thick of a hurricane saving everyone in sight. The plot is as predictable as the prospect of continuing titles.

Anyone who loved the first two titles about search-and-rescue dog Hero will eat up this installment, in which boy Ben feels compelled to rescue his cop father when he's captured by escaped convicts. Once again, nearly superhuman and -canine powers are necessary to overcome exposure to the elements, physical trauma, etc. Readers willing to suspend their disbelief will be entertained.
