With Josie worried about making new friends, the menagerie decides to attend school, too; the critters explore classrooms before reuniting with Josie on the playground. Pleasing watercolor illustrations depict this cute spin on the first-day-of-school story with gentle silliness.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Paola Zakimi. A pine tree loves to watch trains. When a boy and his dad dig her up to take home, she misses the trains. Then she wakes on Christmas morning encircled by the tracks of a toy train. When Christmas is over, the family replants her on their farm near train tracks. The story is sweet without being saccharine; illustrations in soft greens and bright reds are homey and warm.

But when summer is over and storytime moves back indoors, Bunny and his forest friends must find a creative way to keep reading. Nighttime high jinks involve the after-hours book drop, but all ends well in this gently humorous celebration of books and libraries. Winsome, detailed watercolor illustrations invite repeated perusals.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Teagan White. Field mouse Lucy loves winter, but she can't get her mice friends to join her outside. At last, after she figures out how to ice skate, she manages to persuade them to try it, too. The joyful story, featuring rich language (and amusing cheese puns), is accompanied by handsome watercolor, gouache, and colored-pencil illustrations of the woodland setting and the cozy mouse dwelling.
