Illustrated by
Lee Gatlin.
In this third adventure (following Knock About with the Fitzgerald-Trouts), the five self-reliant, adults-free children are back living in their small green car and facing some interpersonal challenges. The overarching question--can they maintain their family solidarity and still develop as individuals?--never weighs down a rollicking, vertiginous plot. A new illustrator provides a fresh take on the spirited Fitzgerald-Trouts and their inviting tropical-island home.

Things are a little tense between the Fitzgerald-Trout siblings (Look Out for the Fitzgerald-Trouts), once again living in their car. There's no letup to the action that punctuates their revived quest for accommodation, this time focusing on a boat. The animated-cartoon quality of the narrative goes hand in hand with the depiction of a child-run family with nonstop play. It's goofy, sweet, and buoyant with good will.

They have a huge amount of fun on their Hawaii-like island, but the kids are outgrowing their accommodation. Kim takes them on a hair-raising car trip to the other side of the island, where they discover their forever home. A warm, genial, wholly original narrative voice.
