Scary Places series.
Hospitals, morgues, and desert islands are just a few of the purportedly haunted locales (all real places) profiled in this series. Each double-page spread includes a summary of the site's reported paranormal phenomena along with photographs; the scrapbook-style layout is busy but readable. Although the texts aren't always precise (or accurate) in their definitions, the volumes are generally satisfactory. Reading list. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Scary Places titles: Cursed Grounds, Monstrous Morgues of the Past, and Shuttered Horror Hospitals.

HorrorScapes series.
Bold headings and melodramatic narratives characterize this high-interest series. The use of period images is effective, but many of the illustrations are cheesy reenactment photographs. A "Then and Now" comparison chart is an engaging feature of each title. While creepy details (e.g., supernatural-looking cover art, skeleton ornamentation on sidebars) may draw readers in, the sensationalism is cumulatively a bit much. Reading list. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these HorrorScapes titles: Ghostly Alcatraz Island, Voodoo in New Orleans, and Witchcraft in Salem.

Scary Places series.
Emphasizing the gory past of ancient cultures, this volume engagingly (if superficially) outlines the origins of eleven ruins, the stories of their discoveries, and the mysteries that continue to surround them. While the text focuses mainly on history, the double-page spreads reflect the series' hook, highlighting the places' sinister aspects through spooky photographs and skeleton-graphic sidebars. A map is appended. Reading list. Bib., glos., ind.

Going Green series.
These books describe different ways we can address environmental issues, on a large scale (e.g., building environmentally friendly skyscrapers) and in everyday life (e.g., riding bicycles or walking, being aware of food growth practices). There are some generalizations and oversimplifications, but mostly the texts are informative. Accessible diagrams and attractive photographs illustrate the information. Reading list. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Going Green titles: Eating Green, Traveling Green, Making Cities Green, Building Greenscrapers, and Using Earth's Underground Heat.
