In 1982, Sep, Arkle, Mack, Lamb, and Hadley ended an amazing summer by making sacrifices to an ancient box in the forest and promising to follow certain rules. But only four years pass before someone breaks the pact and the now-estranged Scottish teens find themselves living out their nightmares. Stewart's atmospheric horror story is often terrifying, and the third-person narrative with moments of humor and pathos should keep readers locked in.

Going on sixteen, Wulliam would rather not assume his family's responsibility as Riverkeep of the Danék River. But when his father is possessed by a bohdan, Wull is compelled to find a cure downriver, where the monstrous, magical mormorach terrorizes the harbor. An evocative, atmospheric world; memorable characters reminiscent of Ahab and Dr. Frankenstein; and a fantastic bestiary make this a worthy debut.
