YA
After the kingdom of Malam's purge of Channelers (women with magical abilities), Lirra's father disappears on a clandestine mission. As teenage Channeler Lirra tracks him down, she crosses paths with Malam's newly minted king, Aodren, as he struggles to lead Malam to recovery and reparation at an international joust. Highly detailed (and laboriously paced) intrigue and some romance ensue in this fantasy set in the world of Summerill's Clash of Kingdoms series.

This sequel to Ever the Hunted finds Britta learning more about her newfound magical powers while navigating her now-uneasy relationship with the king. Although both the characters and the fantasy world they inhabit continue to be well drawn, this series installment suffers from a ponderous opening section as well as a lack of consistent drama and tension throughout.

When seventeen-year-old Britta's bounty hunter father is killed, allegedly by his former apprentice (and the object of Britta's affection), the talented young archer sets off on a quest to find his true killer. There's nothing groundbreaking about this fantasy adventure with a healthy dose of romance; nevertheless, Britta is an appealing heroine, making this a solid, if uninspiring, series-opener.
