These well-designed guessing-game books with board pages start on the left with a question, on the right, a clue. A foldout reveals more of the picture and a second clue; the final fold reveals the answer in a large seventeen-inch square. Bold and vibrant for sharing with a group but sturdy for small hands, these are welcome additions to collections of interactive books. This review covers these titles: Boat Works and Dinosaurs.

Children are given two clues to guess each of six animals--"I have a snout / I have a curly tail"--before the answer is revealed: "I'm a pig!" Each clue is printed on a page-size flap, first opening out, then up, then horizontally across to create a large square-shaped image; it's a rewarding payoff. Thick black outlines and bright colors enhance the creative presentation.

Taback's signature black lines and saturated colors put a squirrel, dog, cat, horse, pigeon, and mouse in an urban context in this collection of giant foldouts. Each spread poses the question, "Who am I?" and provides two clues as a four-panel image is unfolded. An entertaining interactive volume.

Emily Ann misses someone so much that she wraps herself up, jumps in a box, and mails herself across the country. The cheerfully busy illustrations, packed with small details, show Emily's preparations, then her adventures through the U.S. Mail, but never overpower the simple, lyrical text. Children who miss a loved one will relate to Emily's determination to be reunited.

In this newly illustrated adaptation of a Yiddish folk song, die-cuts help tell the story of resourceful Joseph, a farmer/tailor, who recycles his worn overcoat into ever-smaller items. A mixture of painting and collage create a somewhat surreal but delightful effect; details in the art make this a pageant of pre-WWII Jewish-Polish life. Clever, humorous, visually engrossing, poignant, this tribute to a vanished way of life is worth holding on to.
