Stuffed rabbit Mimi and her friend Piggy embark on a trip to Venice (without their little-girl owner, Saya). Their tame travel narrative--packed with sights, sweets, and souvenirs--includes a little conflict when Mimi and Piggy become separated from each other, but it's resolved quickly and neatly. Tashiro's art places the cute, tiny toys into capable renderings of Venice's gorgeous scenery.

English text adapted by Kate Westerlund. Five mice must find a new home after their old one is overrun with cats. They find the perfect place--a junkyard--and build a beautiful home using humans' unwanted leftovers. The inevitable cat encounter ends happily for all, with a nice nod to Aesop. Tashiro's illustrations are warm and homey, the mice are endearing, and the pages are artfully cluttered without being overwrought.

When Hippopotamus says he'd like to change colors, Chameleon gets the idea to offer all the jungle animals his colors. They happily accept but (not surprisingly) almost immediately come to regret their decisions. The lush vibrancy of Tashiro's illustrations is especially apparent in a wordless double-page spread showing all the animals with their new colors and patterns. The Spanish translation is accurate.

Five mice follow the haunting sound of music to a frog concert. Quickly barred ("Frogs only!"), they decide to create their own instruments and stage a mouse concert. Their show is a hit, and when the frogs arrive they all make beautiful music together. Warm textured illustrations help this story about tolerance and cooperation rise above its message-y undertones.
