This picture book adaptation, more Disney than Travers, stands on its own as the Banks children enjoy dreamlike adventures with a very special nanny. They float through the air with Mary's uncle, watch the Corry family putting stars in the sky, and meet zoo animals that speak at night. Soft pastel and colored-pencil drawings have an ethereal quality that heightens the magic.

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Mary Shepard. With a graceful introduction by Gregory Maguire about his meeting with Travers in the 1990s, this omnibus edition contains Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park, all illustrated with Mary Shepard's original drawings. An excerpt from Travers's "On Not Writing for Children" is appended to the hefty but manageable volume.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Flavia Gág. Illustrator Wanda loves to draw the vegetables in the family's beautiful garden, all laid out in choice patterns and with due regard for colors. But woodchucks Pudgy and Charles also love the garden--and they know all the tricks for getting in. In this cheery book, readers are shown the many ways that the tender-hearted Gág family tries to rid itself of the hungry guests.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Mary Shepard. This reissue features Mary Poppins characters in a series of twenty-six vignettes. Each is a self-contained episode and highlights words starting with a particular letter: "T is for Topsy-Turvy...Mr. Banks Tears Through The house like a Tempest. 'Why is my Tobacco Tin Topped-up with Toffee?...' No one can Tell him." And so it goes, with the proceedings enlivened by Shepard's illustrations.

The first half of the book tells how Mary Poppins and her friends help the children do the cooking for a week while their parents are away; the second half contains recipes. Ardent Mary Poppins fans will enjoy the story and its veddy British recipes (jam tarts, shepherd's pie, Yorkshire pudding, etc.), though traditionalists may be opposed to the colorized illustrations. These books are based on two of the Born Free Foundation's rescue efforts: "Into the Blue," which released captive dolphins, and "Operation Tembo," which moved space-starved elephants to larger reserves. Each book contains an illustrated story of the rescue (told, somewhat dubiously, from the animals' perspective), a photographic scrapbook detailing the actual event, and a list of assorted animal facts.
