Every Saturday night, high-school seniors Josie (a.k.a. "Rayne Ravenscroft") and Delia ("Delilah Darkwood") don goth garb and host the campy public-access show Midnite Matinee. Producing the show helps each girl cope with her own real-life drama. Readers with patience for the layers of gratuitous eccentric detail that permeate this plot will be rewarded with a heartfelt story of a friendship in transition, fueled by funny, rapid-fire dialogue.

Seventeen-year-old Carver believes his text message was to blame for the devastating car wreck that killed his three best friends. Looking for an outlet, Carver shares a "goodbye day" with Blake's grandmother and soon does the same with Eli's and Mars's families as well. Zentner skillfully depicts his protagonist's inner turmoil and the beginnings of his recovery in a frequently raw narrative.

Three misfits have vastly different post–high school options. Dill, son of a disgraced preacher, and Travis, whose father has grown more abusive since Travis's brother's death, are unlikely to escape small-town Tennessee; but for blogger Lydia, senior year marks "the beginning of the beginning." The friends' relationships are complex and credible, and Zentner vigorously wrestles with issues of faith, family history, poverty, and mental health.
