When a giant bat terrorizes the research camp, killing several workers and severely injuring Dr. Lefkovitz, Jake faces down the animal in a fight to the death. Despite cardboard characterizations and a predictable plot, the novel's tight focus and many gory scenes will draw horror fiction fans.

With his new friend Alexei, Stephen sneaks off to witness the first atomic bomb test in the desert. The novel features a fast-paced, undemanding portrait of a historically important era, though several aspects of the plot--particularly one involving a spy ring--remain underdeveloped.

A brother-sister combo and their widower father work furiously to save themselves and their city from destruction--and in the process solidify their own uncertain family relationships. Shades of previous Zindel thrillers permeate the repetitive story.

In this swift-moving, heart-pounding tale a teenage boy and girl find a baby dinosaur and confront the wrath of its mother--who, they soon learn, has already attacked the boy's paleontologist father. Despite the anthropomorphizing of the dinosaurs and the caricaturing of some of the novel's minor characters, readers will find this an engrossing story.

After Uncle Cliff's death in the jaws of a sea monster, PC assists an Aboriginal girl in unraveling a native legend. Zindel's trademark wit is occasionally evident in this over-the-top action story filled with mad scientists, underwater torture chambers, and vivid descriptions of gory deaths.
