This brisk, practical overview explores the required training, unique tools, and workplaces of veterinary practice. It also discusses other animal-related jobs, from farmers to wildlife rehabilitators. French doesn’t ignore the mental and emotional challenges involved but encourages children to volunteer or do further research if they’re considering animal-focused careers. Despite often-busy layouts, readers will discover much about what this occupation demands. High-contrast digital illustrations evoke midcentury poster art, depicting a diverse cast of professionals, children, and animals. Websites appended.

Via striking photographs and a conversational text, Eszterhas gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at her job. Yes, she travels around the world to exciting and remote locations to spend time observing exotic creatures. However, getting those "dream" shots means lots of practice shoots in preparation, hours (or days!) of patient waiting, and less-than-luxurious accommodations in the field. Eszterhas's enthusiasm for her work comes through, as does her respect for her subjects and their welfare. This is an engaging introduction to an unusual line of work.

As part of their mission "to make sure [animals] stay healthy and safe," zookeepers are called upon to do a lot of things. Shining a tortoise's shell, brushing a hippo's teeth, and making a frozen bloodsicle for a hyena are some of their many duties. Jenkins's consistently masterful cut-paper illustrations showcase twenty-one creatures (one or two per spread); a few sentences of text provide more information about the animal and its care. The final two spreads offer a quick zoo timeline, "zoo pros and cons," a world map showing some top zoos, and more information about the featured species.

Friendly, direct-address text covers detailed information about firefighters' equipment, training, daily tasks, and helpful skills to have or cultivate. The writing is clear and specific; the expansive, colorful acrylic illustrations, including labeled diagrams, are themselves quite informative. Firefighters' camaraderie comes through clearly; while the disaster-scenario scenes aren't frantic, neither are they unrealistically downplayed. Back matter includes an interview with a retired fire chief, including questions both from McCarthy and from children. Websites.
