This third book in the series (Explorer: The Mystery Boxes; Explorer: The Lost Islands) follows the same successful formula: a handful of graphic artists start with the same topic, each coming up with a unique story. The wide variety of genres and illustration styles keeps the theme fresh and intriguing; here's hoping Kibuishi continues to explore further mysterious topics.

Kibuishi's first graphic-novel anthology, Explorer: The Mystery Boxes, contained seven very different stories about the same mysterious object; here the individual contributors weave diverse tales about lost islands. Kibuishi wraps up the collection with his own contribution, about a fisherman whose greed nearly kills him and his crew. Another satisfying anthology that will leave readers eager for the next.

In this anthology of seven stories, comics creators take the same idea--mysterious boxes--and run with it. Each story--spooky cautionary stories, slapstick humor, tales of enchantment--fits the theme but spins its own twist: part of the fun is anticipating how each will integrate the titular box. The varied illustration styles show off the breadth of comic art.
