At bedtime, Molly asks her dad to "tell me one thing" about various animals. Dad describes each one, noting, "I know that it loves its babies"--something that, as Molly intimates at book's end, he has in common with the animals. The author shirks sentimentality by cleverly and humorously circling his theme of fatherly love; the illustrations are every bit as subtle and wry.

Dickinson's Kin series, Suth's Story, Noli's Story, Po's Story, and Mana's Story, novels about four prehistoric children, are published here in one edition. Interspersed among the chapters of these survival stories are pourquoi tales that provide a folkloric heritage and belief system for the Kin and also explain character motivation.

Illustrated with sketchy colored-pencil drawings on every page (and ending with a map and pronunciation guide), Lively's prose retelling of Virgil's Aeneid is faithful and straightforward, although its origins in poetry have been obscured, and its steady progress makes little allowance for modern ideas of pacing. Aeneas's adventures founding Rome will hold attraction for the right reader. Bib.

This classic tale of a horse's life in Victorian England is reprinted complete and unabridged on sturdy pages with generous type size. Andrew's black-and-white sketches add accents here and there, but lack sufficient detail to contribute much to the narrative. A note about the author concludes the book.

In the middle of the night, Harry and his dog hear someone riding by--the midnight man, throwing stars into the sky. They try to join him, but in a hushed voice like "owl cries and fox calls," the midnight man tells them they can't follow. Doherty's lyrical language is elegant and rhythmic, and Andrew's dark colored pencil illustrations glow with starlight.

Born Free Wildlife series.
These books are based on two of the Born Free Foundation's rescue efforts: "Into the Blue," which released captive dolphins, and "Operation Tembo," which moved space-starved elephants to larger reserves. Each book contains an illustrated story of the rescue (told, somewhat dubiously, from the animals' perspective), a photographic scrapbook detailing the actual event, and a list of assorted animal facts.
