After frolicking through seven books, these five sheep are tuckered out. It's time for bed, but "nighttime noises scare the sheep. / Really, who could go to sleep?" Enter a border collie who settles the sheep down, integrating core concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction. Soft colored-pencil illustrations set a peaceful pastoral scene; the text's assonant sounds are soothing.

A ghost cow is haunting the Noodlemans' farm. At first they think she's preventing the hens from laying, but "Boo Cow" is eventually welcomed into the family after she solves the mystery: neighbor Farmer Hackett is stealing eggs. The humorous (if slight) story is bolstered by Apple's amiable textured pencil and pastel-pencil illustrations.

Pebbles, bubbles, and buckets remind Little Goose of something that makes him happy, but what? To find out, he takes a tour around the pond, ending up back in his mother's encircling wings, and he remembers: round things call to mind Mother's hugs. Expressive colored-pencil illustrations highlighting Little Goose's interactions with the pond dwellers make this otherwise sentimental tale worth sharing one-on-one.

Shaw's infectious rhyming story about a crew of sheep who crash their jeep is successfully presented in a lap-sized board book edition. Apple's expressively scribbly illustrations and Shaw's concise, very funny text work as well for toddlers as they do for the original edition's slightly older audience.

In their seventh rhyming outing, the intrepid sheep take a rocket ride into space. The energetic colored-pencil drawings reveal green space-sheep hidden on board; the sheep never see them, but it's the aliens who get their earth brethren back home safe and sound. The somewhat tired formula bounces along as well as it ever has.

In this sequel to Runaway Radish, Jane and her new pony, Popcorn, go to riding camp, where Radish teaches Jane how to be a confident rider and Radish's former students teach Popcorn how to follow Jane's lead. This beginning chapter book covers a span of several years, an unusually long arc for newly independent readers. Apple's warm sketches illustrate important points in Haas's fine story.

Grandma tells stories from the family name quilt every night that Sadie spends with her in the country. When the quilt blows away in a storm, Sadie fears that the stories are gone, too, but Grandma reassures her that they're "right here inside of me." Together, they sew a new quilt. The original quilt forms an outsize landscape throughout Apple's homey illustrations, unifying its stories with Sadie's own satisfying one.

Radish is a "round, red, bouncy young pony" with a mind of his own. In elementary yet lively prose, Haas presents a pony's-eye view on the human-equine relationship, extended through Apple's breezy pencil sketches of the pony's sometimes-naughty antics. Horse lovers--especially second and third graders, for which neglected audience this book is perfect--will enjoy reading about Radish's well-voiced likes and dislikes.

Big Mama is everyone's favorite grandma, and all the neighborhood youngsters love to spend time with her. On special afternoons, she takes them to Woody's for ice cream, a leisurely outing where getting there and back is at least as wonderful as the treat itself. The imaginative, colored pencil illustrations capture the nostalgic flavor of small-town America in an earlier era.
