Tib, a young caveboy who is teased about the birthmark on his face, makes friends with a shy dinosaur with a similar marking. Of course, Tib has a hard time convincing his tribe that Tumtum is real, seeing as dinosaurs are long-extinct. Suitable for younger comic fans, much of the graphic novel's humor is visual, relayed skillfully in Bannister's lively art.

The kids' adventures in another world continue as one of their own is struck by an incurable illness, and only the Master of Shadows, a terrifying force, can change her fate. Rich, dramatic illustrations and a quick pace make this graphic novel exciting, though the action can occasionally be hard to follow; those new to the series will find this outing rather baffling.

While trying to rescue their friends from the evil Master of Shadows, Grandpa Gabe and Max face a variety of monsters and dangers. The action can be hard to follow, but the panel art creates striking and detailed images that bring the world of Elsewhere to life.
