If readers can suspend disbelief that a high-spirited dog would be allowed backstage during a ballet, they will enjoy this tale about Jake (Jake the Philharmonic Dog). Though the narrative grows tedious (a Nutcracker retelling is included), readers will be taken with the unfussy illustrations featuring brightly colored backgrounds. "Foot Notes" explain the story's dance and theater terms.

Philharmonic stagehand Richie adopts Jake, a dog whose innate love of music allows him to appreciate the orchestra and eventually become its mascot. Instrumental sounds mimic natural ones (percussion, a.k.a. thunder, is the only sound Jake dislikes), and cool-colored acrylic and tempera paintings highlight the lively black-and-white dog. Though somewhat contrived, the story accurately and affectionately depicts major orchestra sections. Glos.
