This nineteenth-century verse relates the festive details of Elephant's grand ball. Rich gouache paintings capture the convivial ambiance of the night, as "beasts, far and near" happily dance in their brightly colored regal attire. The rhythmic verse is lively but lengthy. A glossary is included to help with the period language.

This omnibus edition includes all seven books in the series, with excerpts from Beyond the Wardrobe: The Official Guide to Narnia and a full-color pull-out map of Narnia. The individual titles are much more comfortable, but this weighty volume will find a home in the gift market.

This bland retelling of the Hebrew Bible story of Joseph emphasizes the brothers and the lessons they all learn about the price of jealousy and boasting. Pharaoh is only a bit player, and his wife does not appear at all. Baynes's illustrations have borders, patterns, and shapes that recall ancient Egyptian art.

Marketed as an adult edition, this hefty volume may not deter young fantasy fans accustomed to tomes of epic proportions, but the small type, inclusion of fewer illustrations than many recent editions, and appended C. S. Lewis essay "On Three Ways of Writing for Children" do make this more of a gift book for adults.

The text of this handsome, compact book is the Nicene Creed--a statement of belief used by many Christian denominations. Baynes's detailed illustrations are reminiscent of medieval illuminated manuscripts with large decorated initial letters, mythical beasts, and gold accents and are well-suited to the material. A brief concluding note explains some of the history and origin of the Nicene Creed.

Flat, angular figures illustrate this brief re-imagining of the Hebrew slaves' plight in ancient Egypt. The focus, however, is on the baby Moses, his mother's sadness then joy, and his sister's confidence in his safety. Perspective and a sense of movement increase as the story progresses.

These storybook editions of Lewis's classic fantasy novels include the complete texts and Baynes's own colorized versions of her original line drawings (some of which are hard to make out). Looking for gift ideas? Give these books in their original format. The larger size and color, while fine, aren't necessary. [Review covers these Chronicles of Narnia titles: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew.]

Tolkien fans will enjoy this lovely, nostalgic depiction of the last poem in The Lord of the Rings by the illustrator of many of Tolkien's books. The artist has gathered episodes from the Middle-earth cycle of stories and presented them as Bilbo's remembrances and dreams. Notes at the end identify scenes.

As the title suggests, this oversized volume contains the complete texts of all seven books about Narnia, arranged in a double-column layout with a different colored border for each tale. Baynes's original line drawings, hand-tinted by the artist, are interspersed throughout. Although the size and weight of the compendium are daunting, this is a handsome edition of the classic series.
