Pumpkin-growers Peter Peter and his wife Wanda have a leaky roof to fix. Peter Peter sells their goat for a bag of "treasure," which turns out to be nothing but seeds. The seeds seem worthless--until they grow into a pumpkin enormous enough to make into a house. Simple text and attentive sketchlike illustrations flesh out the classic Mother Goose rhyme.

This early chapter book, with limited vocabulary, few words on the pages, and generous black-and-white illustrations, introduces three robbers: Jo, Flo, and Mo. Each has a special talent: "Jo was strong. Flo was loud. Mo was quick." Their aborted life of crime creates an opportunity for youngsters to practice their reading skills but lacks much characterization and context.
