This refrain (or variations on it) features prominently in this exuberant biographical poem about musician Stevie Wonder. The acrylics are composed of matte geometric shapes in the loud, uncompromising colors of pop music. The book comes with a CD featuring "Fingertips (Part 2)" and "Uptight (Everything's Alright)." Everyone in Toby's family is bringing something to make music at the ring-shout, an African-American tradition, combining "celebration, thanksgiving, and praise." Toby, attending for the first time, can't think of anything. But once the music and dancing begins, Toby speaks "with everything I had, from my toes to my nose." The expressive, richly colored illustrations contribute to the infectious joy. An author's note adds useful history. Bib.

Framed as a conversation with the author's granddaughter, this book affectionately and elegantly presents the contributions of Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Mahalia Jackson, Muddy Waters, Billie Holiday, B. B. King, Ray Charles, Little Richard, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin, all influenced by the blues if not strictly classifiable in that genre. Stylized portraits in bold colors illustrate the book.
