Spare and contemplative horse haiku are arranged into three sections: "In the Field," "At the Barn," and "Under Saddle." Each evocative poem captures a particular moment or impression: horses huddled against the snow, a tail twitching away a fly, a horse cantering prettily around a ring. Fellows's watercolor and pencil illustrations in earthy colors perfectly sketch the allure of horses. "A note on the haiku" is appended.

A Florida family--mother, father, and ten-year-old boy--vacationing in Appalachian Ohio gets caught outside in a blizzard. All seems lost until a cattle dog catches the family's scent and leads them to safety. Rosen's story is told in vivid third person, mainly by observing the brave dog and the frightened family. Impressionistic watercolor illustrations underscore the danger.

"The pond's still airstrip / far-off trumpets grow louder-- / one splash! two...hushed...glides..." Lyrical language, realistic watercolor and pencil illustrations, and thoughtful design capture the quiet thrills of bird watching. Facts about each bird's appearance, habits, and calls (finches: "potato-chips, potato-chips") are unobtrusively included on the spreads and in appended notes, making this an informative as well as artistic work.

An old cup engraved with the initials S. C. is the connection between Sammy Carl, a young boy, and past generations of his family. His mother, Samantha Caroline, sipped from the cup as a child, as did his grandfather, Sam Charles, and before that, his great aunt, Serena Carlotta, who was an immigrant. Though the quiet, reflective narrative lacks tension, the watercolors evoke a keen sense of past and present.

With his dog to keep him company, God sculpts the world out of a watery emptiness then fills it with life in this poetic retelling of a Native American creation myth. Exquisite watercolor and pencil illustrations depict a loosely drawn God as an artist sketching animals, plants, birds, fish, man, and woman. The renderings of flora and fauna evoke reverence for life's diversity. An author's note gives additional information about the tribe and the myth.
