K-3
Illustrated by
Craig Frazier.
Tyler learns how to make his favorite food, spaghetti and meatballs, with help from Chef Lorenzo. Along the way, readers learn about semolina flour, how to make pasta, the origins of olive oil, etc. The bold, digitally colored pen-and-ink drawings depict a spindly-limbed budding chef who looks a bit too young for independent cooking. A recipe and ingredient information are appended.

Solid, up-to-date information is leavened with lively verse and a touch of whimsy. The text celebrates trucks' features, from cabs to pistons, and diverse cargoes ("books and bulldozers, / dolls and clocks"). Frazier plays with scale--either the cargoes are gigantic or the trucks are toys--to depict the chunky vehicles. This is a graphically handsome addition to a popular genre.
