Illustrated by
Sarah Gibb.
McKay retells ten familiar fairy tales from the European tradition. Within the context of varied tellers and points of view, the gist of the classic stories remains largely intact, but McKay brings her own warm, insightful humor into the magical world. Earnest, scruffy, brave, greedy, or hard-working, her child characters are earthy and realistic, with Gibb's delicate silhouette illustrations casting a sparkle of glamour over them.

Emily Windsnap series.

Natacha Ledwidge.
The sixth book features half-mermaid Emily on an island field trip when a ghostly ship appears. Caught between this world and mystical Atlantis, only Emily can rescue the passengers from disappearing forever. Imaginative details of human and mer worlds coexist with simplistic characterization and other narrative turnoffs that fans of the light series may overlook. Black-and-white spot art opens each chapter.

With her pony-drawn cart, Princess travels for years in search of her kingdom. This unusually practical and kind princess's lack of property and affluence doesn't prevent her from procuring happiness. Illustrated with Gibb's striking silhouette art in black and white with pops of color, this is a classic-feeling princess fairy tale with an underdog spin and the expected happy ending.

Fairy-tale aficionados and princess-obsessed kids will all find something to love in this refined retelling. Beauty's sincerity and innocence is nicely contrasted with her sisters' shallowness and greed. Gibb renders many of the illustrations in profile or silhouettes, some in color and some in dramatic black-and-white with color accents. There's lots of rich detail to pore over time and again.
