(3) K-3 Illustrated by Geneviève Godbout. Anne of Green Gables says good night to the things and people she loves, giving brief explanations for each. Though the chief appeal may be for adults familiar with L. M. Montgomery's famous story, the hushed text combines with ethereal pastel and colored-pencil illustrations in muted colors to create a bedtime book well suited to lulling young listeners to sleep.

(3) K-3 Adapted by Amy Novesky. Illustrated by Genevieve Godbout. This picture book adaptation, more Disney than Travers, stands on its own as the Banks children enjoy dreamlike adventures with a very special nanny. They float through the air with Mary's uncle, watch the Corry family putting stars in the sky, and meet zoo animals that speak at night. Soft pastel and colored-pencil drawings have an ethereal quality that heightens the magic.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Geneviève Godbout. In this Santa origin story, a child booms "HO, HO, HO!" in the cradle, delivers presents as a toddler, trains hamsters to pull a miniature sleigh. His parents speculate about his future: e.g., might wearing red mean he'll be a firefighter? Readers will enjoy watching Santa grow up to be exactly who he is. Warm, textured illustrations enrich this humorous, love-suffused tale.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Genevieve Godbout. After he finds a penny, Theodore experiences a day full of good outcomes: the weather improves, he succeeds at tetherball, etc. Readers expecting a twist of fate won't find one, but they'll witness a rousing example of generosity: having realized his good fortune, Theodore leaves the penny behind for someone else. The cheery colored-pencil illustrations have an ultra-gauzy look.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Geneviève Godbout. Frustrated with being small and angry at the limits Mommy sets, five-year-old Joseph storms outside. He dreams up a fantasy encounter with a charming new mother--a walrus. When he returns, his anger has faded and he's ready to begin again. Told in a childlike voice, the story explores the workings of the imagination with considerable help from the spacious, softly colored pictures.
