High-school seniors Josiah (earnest, insecure) and Deja (extroverted, charming) have worked together at a theme park–like pumpkin patch for three years. It's their final shift, and Deja helps Josiah pursue his crush: Fudge Shoppe Girl. It becomes gradually clear that the friendship could blossom into something more. Rowell's dialogue is sharp and punchy; Hicks's panel illustrations expertly capture the lovable main characters and the entertaining particulars of this autumnal setting.

(3) 4-6 Bigfoot Boy series. Illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks. Will the Northwoods be cleared for a new golf course, or will Sasquatch, guardian of the forest, help protect the land? Squirrel Sidney and other forest creatures guide humans Rufus and Penny to the magic Q'achi totem, which the trickster ravens don't want to give up. Energetic graphic-novel panels swiftly move the plot to a satisfying conclusion series followers have been waiting for.

(4) 4-6 Bigfoot Boy series. Illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks. The second graphic novel in this series picks up with Rufus thrilled to be returning to his grandmother's house where his adventures began after finding a totem that turned him into Bigfoot (Into the Woods). The story that unfolds is humorous and perfectly targeted to the audience, though it ends in an abrupt way that may leave readers anxious rather than anticipatory.

In this funny graphic novel, first in an anticipated series, ten-year-old Rufus stumbles upon an ancient totem that turns him into Bigfoot. A snarky new friend named Penny, a trusty squirrel advisor, and talking wolves that desperately want the totem for themselves round out the lively cast. The book ultimately lacks a clear climax, but Hicks's dynamic art in a deep-woodsy palette maintains the action.
