Delicate portraits of children demonstrate activities to do in different types of weather, from "feel the glow" and "make a shadow" in the sun, to "taste a raindrop" and "jump in a river" in the rain. While children depicted seem engaged in what they are doing, the pale and rather washed-out tones of the illustrations don't particularly capture the eye.

As Jen builds a sandcastle, other kids ask if they can help. By day's end, the children have created an elaborate castle, but "as soon as we leave, someone will wreck it." Jen, who began it all, knows how to end it, and the new friends cement their bond by stomping out the castle in a dance-like frenzy. Yee's clipped yet lulling prose builds repetition, while softly washed illustrations set the lazy, beach-day scene.
