A boy and mother collect seashells and dig in the sand in this rhyming story. Along with counting practice ("Two more shells-- / numbers nine and ten. / When we get home, / Let's count them again"), Ochiltree incorporates information about seashells into the text and at book's end. The bold shapes, colors, and textures in Kreloff's collages will dazzle young beach lovers.

With Brian Stokes Mitchell. Tony Award winner Mitchell helped assemble this homage to "all things theater"--an alphabet book highlighting the collaborative nature of Broadway play production. The busy layout, complete with bustling, crowded illustrations, is confusing but it does convey the energy of the performing arts. A CD of Mitchell singing the show tune "I Was Here" is included.

"Max sat. But not for long." Cape-wearing Max is a bundle of energy and imagination--always climbing new heights (literally) and ready to face (pretend) danger head-on. Saving his lunch from a real flock of gulls becomes his biggest challenge yet. The colorful mixed-media illustrations, anchored by thick black lines, are a good match for the kid-fantasy story line.

Childlike illustrations portray a father and son's day, during which they carry on an affectionate dialogue about how the boy wishes he were bigger, then reverse roles to play "Let's pretend." The gentle story ends with a soothing bedtime routine: "If you were [as big as] a whale...how could I dry you off...comb your hair...tuck you in...and kiss you good night."

Isabel--the girl of wayward-curl fame--awakes one morning determined to be very, very good, but she ultimately finds her mother's makeup irresistible and scissors the only cure for her unruly mane. It's about time someone gave flesh to this irrepressible nursery rhyme legend, but Ziefert's resolution is rather limp. Kreloff's scribbly kid-friendly illustrations, however, are a real treat.

This series features three levels of beginning reader texts: up to fifty words (level one), one hundred words (level two), and two hundred words (level three). The illustrations are consistently lively, the stories range from forced to adequate (Class Play, for more confident readers, is engaging). There are nine other spring 2005 books in this series. Review covers these I'm Going to Read! titles: A Class Play with Ms. Vanilla, Fish Wish, Go Away, Crows!, I'm Going to New York to Visit the Lions, Silly Pig, and Who Spilled the Milk?.
