This unabridged, outsized version of Stevenson's novel, first published in 1883 and set in the 1700s, follows the adventures of Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, and the crew of the Hispaniola. What makes this edition stand out are the book's illustrations (hand-colored vinyl cuts and wood textures) and design, which beautifully evoke printed works from the past.

Before the events of His Dark Materials, twenty-four-year-old Lee Scoresby crash-lands on the island of Novy Odense. There, he's sucked into a political struggle and meets the fearsome, inscrutable Iorek Byrnison. This adventure exudes the breezy charm of an old-fashioned Western thanks to its fast-talking, straight-shooting hero. Engraved spot illustrations add to the tapestry of Pullman's fully realized alternate world.

Katy Mouse guides her little brother Tiny on his first expedition to the wheat field. Tiny gets lost playing hide-and-seek; there's a tender reunion, and then the best game: playing house in the formerly scary old boot that so alarmed Tiny while separated from Katy. Visually lovely, graphically distinguished, and perfectly cadenced, this warm-hearted adventure belongs in every library.

Two years after the conclusion of The Amber Spyglass, Lyra and her daemon are home in Oxford, where one afternoon they see a flock of starlings attack another bird. Lyra realizes the bird is a witch's daemon and goes to the rescue. The story, a pendant to the His Dark Materials epic trilogy, is admirably self-contained. Readers get their own puzzles to ponder in the included fold-out map, postcard, travel guide page, and cruise brochure.

The unabridged text of Stevenson's classic adventure is presented in a large typeface and with lots of white space, making this volume less intimidating than many other editions. The busy, scratchy pen-and-ink illustrations have a somewhat dated feel but will probably not diminish the appeal of this novel for fans of pirate tales.

Published in the small format of this series, this is the moving tale of two sisters who find a strange, mute, naked boy and adopt him. Pronounced a fairy child by the local wise woman, he stays with the family, as predicted, for just a year and a day, but changes their lives for always. Mayne's bracing, vivid prose and the unusual but heartwarming story are together absolutely spectacular.
