In the latest installment of the author and illustrator's books about construction (Roadwork; Demolition; Construction), a series of impressive vehicles (bulldozer, digger, dump truck, etc.) performs the steps of making a new...oh, why ruin the surprise? The machines look big and so is the type; rhyme and (not-always-convincing) onomatopoeia work together to convey basic but satisfying information about the building process.

Sutton and Lovelock (Roadwork; Demolition) offer a builder's-eye view of a construction project. The rhyming text's onomatopoeia and action verbs capture the site's sounds; cleanly rendered illustrations feature heavy machinery, tools, and men and women hard at work. Listeners will enjoy guessing what the new building will be before the reveal: "The library's here for everyone. / Ready... / STEADY... / READ!"

As the hive prepares for winter, worker bee Scout embarks on a food-foraging expedition, searching for enough nectar and pollen to survive. Huber's simple but dynamic language hums with an avian vibrancy. In Lovelock's watercolor, acrylic ink, and colored-pencil illustrations, splattered dots represent pollen and hailstones; textured brushstrokes convey flight patterns, vibrating wings, and pelting rain. A satisfying early science book. Ind.

A demolition crew tears down an old building, sorts scraps of material, and hauls the debris off to make room for a new construction project, revealed at the end to be a playground. The rhyming text, full of onomatopoeia and muscular action words, captures the excitement and energy of big trucks hard at work. Meticulous illustrations give the job site a suitably dusty patina.

"The ting of the rain-- / Ping-itta-pang..." Climb aboard the Rain Train for a gentle trip through a stormy night. De Roo's rhyming, lyrical text never derails; the onomatopoeic verse rolls rhythmically along, lulling listeners and moving the action forward. Lovelock's misty watercolor and ink illustrations, dominated by dusky purples and blues, convey the excitement of a special nighttime journey.

Holly's father explains how various animal moms care for their newborns ("If you were a baby owl, your mother would have fed you mice") before describing how her own mother cared for her when she was a baby. The book is a sticky-sweet treatment of an otherwise enlightening concept. Lovelock gracefully contrasts watercolor, acrylic, ink, and colored-pencil illustrations of the human father and daughter with images of the animal pairs.

With clamorous rhymes and onomatopoeia, this book shows how a road is constructed, from surveying and digging to landscaping and lunch breaks. The roles of the vehicles, each responsible for a different phase of construction, are explained at the end. Pigmented ink illustrations feature flecks of color that echo the messiness of real roadwork.
