This utilitarian but well-organized book focuses on words related to school and is divided into categories such as "classroom," "playground," and "colors." For each word, a photo of a familiar object such as a pencil or a slide is paired with a clearly drawn image of a girl signing the word and a written description of how to carry out the sign. (3) K-3 Step into Reading series. Illustrated by Margeaux Lucas. Short (five words or less) sentences describe the antics of six dinosaurs who escape the pages of a book. They don sunglasses and hats, grab surfboards to ride the waves, sip lemonade, and go water-skiing. Large type and sunny cartoons supporting the action will help the earliest readers feel comfortable with the story's rhymes--while making them giggle.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Margeaux Lucas. Abby wants to run in the big race at the town fair. Although others encourage her to enter the pie-eating contest instead, she continues to train, monitoring and treating her asthma with her doctor's help, and wins the race. Though the text is message-y, its lessons about determination and self-confidence are inspiring. Cheerful illustrations show Abby hard at work.

(3) K-3 Step into Reading series. Illustrated by Margeaux Lucas. Hula-dancing dinosaurs leap right out of a book in the school library and wreak havoc by prancing and romping around school. Peeking in classrooms and "jiggling and wiggling to and fro. / Wiping chalkboards as they go" are some of their shenanigans. The simple rhyming text, word repetition, and silly illustrations will have early readers giggling.
