With clear prose and an eye for telling detail, Freedman narrates the 1773 destruction of British tea in Boston Harbor. Quoting heavily from the firsthand accounts from younger participants, Freedman provides a young person's view of the protest (which is somewhat limited in showing the larger context). Malone's crowd-filled watercolors in a tea-brown palette establish the setting nicely. Timeline. Bib., ind.

This short biography details the life of Njinga, a princess born into the Ndongo Kingdom of central West Africa in the sixteenth century who eventually became her tribe's first queen. The central narrative--organized meanderingly--is complemented by sidebars, photographs, and illustrations. This is a balanced portrayal that includes coverage on some touchy subjects, such as slavery, cannibalism, and infanticide. Bib.

Profiling some of history's most notorious women rulers, this series employs crisp writing along with an appealing mix of dramatic paintings and photographs (mainly of places and items). The main texts deliver plenty of gory details; most volumes include sidebars highlighting cultural specifics. It's a little all over the place, but the series, with its sharp hook, should appeal to a diverse readership. Review covers these Thinking Girl's Treasury of Dastardly Dames titles: Agrippina, Catherine de' Medici, Cixi, Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, and Mary Tudor.

The history of hair is told chronologically through strands of facts grouped by time period, from "Prehistory, Africa" ("One day, cave painters notice that their paintbrushes aren't bad at grooming hair") through "2007, England" ("Someone gets the most expensive haircut ever--$16,300.00"). The conversational tone and humorous (while also gallery-worthy) paintings bolster the volume's kid-friendliness. Bib.

In this retelling of the New York City Ballet version of E. T. A. Hoffmann's story, Malone's richly colored, opaque watercolors embellish the dancers' magic. This book, which comes with a CD, provides a good entry-point before attending a performance as well as a chance to relive the experience afterward.

One by one, participants in the Nativity story address the reader, each monologue segueing neatly into the next. All display a keenly poetic sensibility, and together they create a retelling of the Christmas story that is both down-to-earth and filled with majesty. The parade of travelers is depicted with stately pageantry in the medieval-like paintings, brilliant with color and feeling.

In detailed paintings a surprisingly mature Peter and his animal friends cleverly capture the threatening wolf, as usual. But in a "kinder" ending, the now-repentant wolf is led back to the forest, coughing up the live duck along the way. Portraits on endpapers nicely pair the animals with the instrument representing them. A narrated CD is included.

These two mother-daughter myth cycles from ancient Greece--the paired stories of Leto and her daughter Artemis, and Demeter and her daughter Persephone--are skillfully retold and engagingly paced. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate the action. However, the hook of focusing on the mother-daughter bond will likely be more appealing to doting mothers than to their independent daughters. Bib., glos.

Many of these sixteen poems can be found elsewhere, but the collection has a pleasing rhythm from beginning to end that makes it especially suitable for bedtime reading. Traditional poems ("Wynken, Blynken and Nod") are included, along with pieces by contemporary poets including Barbara Juster Esbensen and Dennis Lee. Malone's soft, stylized illustrations complement the book's mood.

French's retellings of seven well-known fairy tales, including "Hansel and Gretel," "Cinderella," and "The Shoemaker and the Elves," are lively and well suited to reading aloud. The storytelling language reflects the oral origins of the tales with plenty of repetition and onomatopoeia ("patter, patter, patter," "CRASH!"). The stiff illustrations, however, contrast with the approachable, engaging stories.

This simple but appealing book opens with a section that concentrates on the essential facts of St. Francis's life. The biography is followed by engaging retellings of familiar legends such as that of St. Francis taming the wolf of Gubbio, and introducing the first Christmas crèche. Malone's illustrations employ the rich palette of medieval illumination reminiscent of books of hours. A short author's note indicates sources.

In this illustrated compendium of Arthurian information, the author discusses the probable historical king and describes other connections between the legends and known facts. Although the volume includes useful information about customs, as well as descriptions of many of the characters and events in the tales, a haphazard organization makes the volume seem disjointed. A thoughtfully selected collection of quotes elucidates words chosen to represent each letter of the alphabet, from animal for A to zoo for Z. The words of Thomas Jefferson, Gary Soto, and Edna St. Vincent Millay, among others, grace the pages; quotations from the Book of Genesis and the Inuit and Ute Indians also appear. Gouache paintings blend realistic and mystical elements, effectively evoking the poetry of the words.
