Who HQ: Who Was...? series.
Illustrated by
Stephen Marchesi.
Grosset's long-running Who Was...? series is re-branded. These readable, informative biographies are marred only by the caricatured cover illustrations (typical of the classic series) and interior pencil illustrations that are inconsistent in style. Otherwise, these will give young readers a good sense of who these people were (or are). Occasional full- and double-page text boxes successfully illuminate related topics. Timeline. Bib. Review covers these Who HQ: Who Was...? titles: Who Was Jane Austen?, Who Was Chuck Jones?, Who Was Coretta Scott King?, Who Is Ralph Lauren?Who Was Alexander Hamilton?, Who Was Lewis Carroll?, Who Is Pope Francis?, and Who Was Andrew Jackson?.

Smithsonian's Backyard series.
Illustrated by
Stephen Marchesi.
Framed as a story but lacking narrative vigor, this text describes a box turtle's day as she looks for food, takes refuge from the midday sun, finds a safe nesting spot, and lays her eggs. The accompanying illustrations are awash with painterly texture, realistic detail, and rich earth tones. Additional facts about box turtles are appended. Glos.

Text and illustrations offer a glimpse at the actions of a scalloped hammerhead shark. Giving birth, searching for and capturing prey, and escaping from her own enemies, Hammerhead moves purposefully through a marine world that is by turn tranquil and deadly. A few brief paragraphs at the end of the book provide additional information. Glos.
