Poetry and mixed-media cutaway art blend beautifully in this collection of gently connected verses about what lies under our feet. Tree roots and seeds, fossils and tunnels, a basement, and pirate treasure all take center stage by turns, in rhythms perfect for reading aloud. The concluding poem draws everything together, and the endnotes about each poem combine science with the author's observations and experience.

As in Mirror Mirror and Follow Follow, two sides of fourteen familiar Greek myths are presented in Singer's inspired, accessible reverso-poem pairs: the lines of the second are the same but in reversed order, with punctuation changes affecting meaning and perspective. Summaries of the myths appear in footers. Drenched in Mediterranean turquoise and golds, the rich acrylic illustrations "echo" the symmetry.

This latest early reader featuring Frog and his pond companions contains two vignettes. In the first, the friends are fascinated by a rainbow and determined to find the gold that little Jumping Mouse says is at the end. Next, a fisherman invades the pond; will Frog have to leave his home? Bright illustrations help the reader make predictions and inferences about the accessible stories.

As in Mirror Mirror, poems subvert traditional tales by offering two points of view on a story: what goes down on the left-hand of the page goes up on the right, with line breaks and punctuation revised for strategic effect. The twelve referenced tales include "Puss in Boots," "The Little Mermaid," and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," and acrylic illustrations mirror the poems' structures.

In these three lighthearted, brief vignettes, Frog and friend Little Brown Bat compare their differences and similarities, Frog allows all his friends to join him on a vacation, and he's given his own star by a mysterious Starman. The stories are gently humorous, but they lack cohesiveness--and a real point. Masse's illustrations are brightly colored, cartoonlike, and appealing.

This collection of stories follows Frog and his friends as he meets--and loses--new friend Flower (a flower), soars on the back of a seagull, and needs his friends' help falling asleep. New readers will appreciate the easy-to-read sentences in the accessible stories, while Masse's breezy illustrations bring to life the cute animal characters in their whimsical pond-side home.

In three stories about friendship, cute-as-can-be Frog and his friends try to identify a mysterious object in the pond, re-gift an imperfect--or is it perfect?--scarf, and help an escaped hippo appreciate zoo life. The thoughtful placement of the illustrations supports the easy-to-read text well, giving new readers a good foundation for more challenging books.

Through a poetic invention she dubs the reverso, Singer meditates on twelve familiar folktales, and, via the magic of shifting line breaks and punctuation, their shadows. Each free-verse poem has two stanzas, set on facing columns, where the second is the first reversed. Similarly bifurcated illustrations, Shrek-bright, face the cleverly constructed and insightful poems.

It's love at first sight for mouse Tully after meeting Frill in the pantry. They get even closer after a troublesome cat forces the two into a makeshift shelter under the stove. Eventually the couple escapes to the roof, and underneath the stars Frill consents to be Tully's bride. Nicely textured acrylic and gel illustrations in saturated hues decorate this touching love story.

The princess is bad-tempered and BORED. Happily-ever-after comes in the form of a prince who shows her that, with paper, one can construct things, which leads to other activities that prevent boredom from creeping in ever again. Readers may empathize with the princess, but her unpleasantness is annoying. Dynamic angular illustrations display an elegance befitting a princess.

In heartfelt, if sometimes awkward verse, an adoptive mother tells her Chinese-born daughter about her unknown birth mother, comparing the roles both mothers play in the child's life and delivering a positive message about their "two different kinds of love." While occasionally sentimental, the illustrations feature some attractive mother-daughter images, several with the birth mother's benign face hidden in the landscape.

Pig number one is trying to sleep, but pigs two through ten have other ideas, from reading in bed to playing the drums; counting back down restores the peace. The text includes some challenging vocabulary ("Bengal Lancer"?) and nods to Shakespeare that will likely go over kids' heads. But the swinging rhyme and energetic acrylics are sure to delight them.

Three very different tales--"Puss-in-Boots," "Town Mouse and Country Mouse," and "Dick Whittington and His Cat"--are given serviceable retellings. Playful acrylic illustrations generously scattered throughout use a similar naive style for each tale, reinforcing the connection between them. No source notes are included.
