In occasionally uneven verses, self-proclaimed expert Percy (from Back-to-School Rules and Thanksgiving Rules) offers rules for enjoying birthdays. Most aren't surprising, but he does provide a useful message about getting older: "Discover life's possibilities! / Have fun, try something new." The jaunty illustrations feature plenty of eye-catching patterns, including lined notebook and graph papers--fitting with the "rules" theme.

Chloe's sister, Belinda, is a natural ballerina; Chloe, on the other hand, has "naughty toes" and a more flamboyant style. Mr. Tiempo, the piano player for the class, inspires Chloe to "follow her feet" in tap shoes. The loose illustrations capture the sisters' differences and the story's humor, but at times it's difficult to tell the characters apart.

From "do NOT show up late" to "do NOT do unto others," Percy Isaac Gifford offers his rules for success in school. Unfortunately, all the rules are for what not to do, so when he lists the last one, "don't forget to have lots of fun," it's hard to imagine what he means. Playful illustrations enhance the levity in the occasionally uneven rhyming text.

Percy Isaac Gifford offers ten simple guidelines for getting the most out of the Thanksgiving holiday. From dressing up without complaining to returning for second helpings to giving plenty of appreciative hugs, the rhyming text dishes out rules at a frenetic pace. The verse is occasionally awkward, but the how-to premise and spirited illustrations have goofy charm.

Pursued by a fox, ten turkeys flee into the farmer's house. They find hiding places big enough for one, two, three, and so on, but no place is big enough to conceal all ten birds. What's more, an ominous-looking farmer is searching for them too. A cast of children in funny, quirky costumes acts out the rhyming text of this clever counting book.
