Ten-year-old Beverly tries to keep her friend Kabungo, also ten, out of trouble--no easy feat, as Kabungo is an unruly cavegirl who lives in a cave on Main Street. This premise may seem absurd, but the offbeat, episodic novel is surprisingly charming. Rolli uses distinctive language and familiar events to create gentle humor and misunderstandings. Grayscale illustrations show the girls having fun.

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Milan Pavlovic. When Danny flees his house, angry about his family's planned move, he falls to the bottom of a very deep hole, where he meets a memorable talking mole. After Danny saves his new friend from a snake attack, he's rescued--and ready for another adventure. The fantasy elements are well incorporated, and Danny's change of heart is believable in this brief, quirky novel.

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Milan Pavlovic. Gran's taking nine-year-old Alice and eight-year-old Cal on a road trip across Canada. The trio begin in Newfoundland and head west, crisscrossing every province, territory, and capital city. An accessible narrative, color photos, panels of historical comics, maps, and an occasional silly poem written by Gran make this an engaging and entertaining look at the vast country that is Canada. Ind.
