This cheerful but slight spin on a classic tale reimagines Jack squandering his family's dwindling money on a big bag of glittering jelly beans. Descriptions of jelly bean feasts may appeal to sweet-tooth readers, but the story offers little new substance. Still, kids will enjoy ogling the eye-popping, rainbow-hued illustrations in which Pichon sweetly captures the familiar characters.

Despite her efforts to please her parents by conforming to a big and bad persona, Sweet Little Wolf's love of happily-ever-after fairy tales (and "all things pretty and pink") results in her befriending her supper rather than eating it. Brightly illustrated with plenty of pink and purple, this charming twist on the classic tale has a sweet and satisfying alternative happy ending.

Mr. Troll doesn't really want to eat those billy goats; he just wants to sleep without the clopping of hooves overhead. Mother Goat saves the day with hoof-muffling knitted booties and a housewarming gift for the appeased troll. Pichon's energetic illustrations effectively complement the text, which "trip-traps" nicely off the tongue. A light and humorous folklore take-off that's well suited for group sharing.

In an amusing circular tale set in an unnamed African country, Beatrice is trying to reach her grandfather's house with her bunch of bananas intact. Various jungle animals, through accident or mischief, take away her bananas and replace them with other gifts, until she winds up with a new bunch of bananas just as beautiful as the first. The jungle landscape is depicted in bright fantasy colors.

These verses, rhymes, and prayers and blessings to lull little ones to sleep include such classics as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Wee Willie Winkie," as well as less familiar offerings. Everyone and everything--sun, moon, animals, and even sleeping children--sport smiles in the color-saturated pictures decorating the pages. This is a sweet and pleasantly uncluttered collection of bedtime verse but not an especially outstanding one.
