"I love Nanna's button tin. It's full of stories," begins the little-girl narrator. She empties out her grandmother's button container, searching for the perfect replacement for Teddy's lost button eye. As they sift through the buttons together, Nanna and her granddaughter share special memories associated with them. Sunny gouache illustrations reflect the characters' close relationship and the warmth of their memories.

In this extended free-verse monologue, Pearl tells of her grandmother's last days and dementia-related death. The voice is unpretentious, and Murphy accords Pearl real dignity in her grief. Personality-rich pencil-and-ink drawings support the gentle tone. The book's comfort, the truth that bereavement changes relationships, and sometimes for the better, is at just the right pitch for Pearl and for her readers.
