Here are collected (and reissued from the 1971 original) twelve literary fairy tales from several different European traditions, including Hans Christian ­Andersen's "The Nightingale"; ­Barbara Leonie Picard's "The Three Wishes"; Seumas ­MacManus's "Feather o' My Wing." Readers may recognize Katharine Pyle's "The Dreamer" because of Uri Shulevitz's picture book The Treasure, and Ruth Manning-Sanders's "The Seven Simons" contains the gist of The Five Chinese Brothers without the racism. The voices of these master storytellers are unfailingly distinctive and involving; frequent full-page-plus illustrations in the Provensens' inimitable style provide robust accompaniment. A foreword by Joan Bodger (author of How the Heather Looks) explaining the ­difference between a ­literary fairy tale and a folktale is a delightful bonus.

(3) PS Illustrated by Alice Provensen & Martin Provensen. In this collection originally published in 1951, the Provensens lend their two-dimensional but expressive style to Stevenson's rhythmic, child-voiced 1885 poems. Several poems are omitted, likely because of changing cultural attitudes, and there are small modifications in sequence and layout. The digitally restored illustrations are more muted than in previous editions; the effect is a pastel, child-friendly volume with appeal to the nursery-rhyme set.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Alice Provensen & Martin Provensen. Mr. Roly-Poly starts his own circus, but after the usual suspects--trained lion, fat lady, thin man, clowns, etc.,--do their thing, something is decidedly lacking. The ending, which reveals the missing element, is anticlimactic, but young readers will enjoy the breathless storytelling and the jubilant art, which is neither demeaned nor enhanced by intermittent flocked panels.

(3) PS Illustrated by Alice Provensen & Martin Provensen. A little duckling looks for other farm animals to join him on his walk: he sees two colts, three calves, four turkeys, and so on. When all the animals refuse, the duckling joins his own family and decides that is the best kind of walk. Reissued with a larger trim size, the simple, childlike story has a satisfying, predictable ending and is illustrated with the Provensens' distinctive primitive paintings.
