Gondra is a biracial (gender-unspecified) dragon, a mixture of both Eastern and Western dragon attributes. The little dragon explains and celebrates the ways it takes after each parent (Gondra can breathe fire and mist!). Reinhardt's watercolor, ink, and collage illustrations can be cluttered and overly decorative. Still, this is a well-meaning and otherwise effective story about combining traditions to create a new family.

Spare and lilting rhymes remind readers that as kids hit various markers (first laugh, first friend, etc.), they will experience failure: "Each recipe we undertake / can rise or fall, / can burn or bake." In her ink and watercolor art showing children hitting and missing their marks, Reinhardt pays particular attention to faces registering the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

Park and Reinhardt pair animal names with actions. Each double-page spread features a single phrase (e.g., "Flounders flounder") and the definition of the verb form ("to flounder = to be helpless"). Visual humor abounds in the watercolor and ink pictures. The final spread gives the etymological background ("Old English," "Old North French") of each animal name and action.

Two boys who "just had to see how things worked" grow into two of America's great inventors and manufacturers: Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. When Henry, frustrated by repeated failure, meets Thomas, he gets simple yet critical advice: "Keep at it." A lively tale of tenacity and passion, illustrated with watercolor and pencil-and-ink illustrations that reflect the text's energy and high spirits. Timeline. Bib.

Rabbi Benjamin's congregants present him with a Jewish holiday–themed vest on Rosh Hashanah, but feasting through Sukkot, Hanukkah, and Passover causes the rabbi to literally burst his buttons. There's much joy in this cheery holiday book, from kid-pleasing sound effects (pop! splat! plop!) to the depiction of a range of Jewish families. Information about and recipes for each holiday are appended. Glos.

Pig Flora is on a boat headed to the South Pole, where she knows she'll find adventure (never mind that Amos the sailor refers to her as his "little ham bone"). Like all good animal adventure stories, this one has a richly drawn cast; dedicated sled dog Oscar will move readers to tears. Thirty-eight fast-paced chapters make this perfect for reading aloud.
