(3) PS Illustrated by Lee White. "Our lives begin, middle, / and end on... / This pretty planet / spinning through space." Okay, so the lyrics work best sung to the melody, but they offer inspiration for some really magical illustrations. The fanciful detail-rich pictures, on full-bleed single pages, double-page spreads, and panels, celebrate the song's message to care for our planet. A white rabbit and two children travel Bedknobs and Broomsticks-style through time and space, marveling at fantastic scenes until they arrive at our polluted present. They get to work, clean up the mess, and sail their balloon-powered bed back home. Sheet music for two versions of the song--one in 6/4 time and a round in 4/4 time--is included.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Young Kate figures out a solution to gale-force winds surrounding a man's house: plant trees. Years pass, and the man and Kate, both older, enjoy a picnic on his now-sheltered lawn. White's mixed-media illustrations employ a soft palette, ceding the focus to perpetual motion and commotion. Scanlon's poetic text has enough unpredictability to lend interest and energy. A note about the importance of trees is appended.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Emma loves the ocean and its creatures. One day, she and her dog discover a beached baby whale. Feeling a deep kinship with the whale, Emma waits until the tide comes in and helps it back into the ocean, where its mother is waiting. Although rescuing whales is of course more complicated, this is gentle, lyrical magical realism, accompanied by swirly, evocative illustrations.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. In the Arctic winter a girl and her grandfather bemoan the lack of color: everything is a shade of white and the days are as dark as night. But hope returns one night when, from the top of a hill, they view the swirling colors of the aurora borealis. The text is lyrical and evocative, but the book depends on some questionable assumptions about Arctic cultures.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Viorst's collection of over fifty poems expresses wry humor about and sharp observation of the range of feelings children experience in their everyday lives. Subjects include school, friends, and family; the strongest poems go to the heart of feelings (such as the one about breaking up with a best friend). White's illustrations bring zany humor, and even sometimes add their own little twist.

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Lee White. Penelope can't escape her mother's penchant for planning every minute, until she falls through a hole in her schedule and finds herself in the Wonderland-esque Realm of Possibility. Britt's playful puns move the story along as Penelope strives to save the Realm from the evil timekeeper Chronos, and White's violet-hued illustrations add life and movement.

Alternating between "Inside" and "Outside," each poem's title is simply the breed name--Maine Coon, Japanese Bobtail, Scottish Fold--while the haiku captures its essence. Each poem is paired with digitally created illustrations with light touches of collage, patterns, and playful scratched lines. An appendix gives additional breed information.

(3) 4-6 Translated by E. M. O'Connor. Illustrated by Lee White. Eleven-year-old Chilean girl Celeste faces upheaval when a brutal dictator rises to power, her parents go into hiding, and she is shipped off to Maine. Threads of mysticism lend an interesting element, but the book is best when rooted in reality, transporting readers with sensory-steeped settings and Celeste's vividly evoked feelings of alienation. Black-and-white illustrations depict the turmoil but with a soft touch.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Jake's classmate Sophie asks if he'll babysit her fish Yo-Yo for the weekend. He agrees--"how hard can it be?"--but second-guesses himself, constructing scenarios for which he'll be unprepared. Jake is adorably neurotic, and the (sort of) twist ending is executed brilliantly. White's illustrations are fascinatingly surreal-looking and subtly hilarious (Herring Potter is on hand for Yo-Yo's bedtime reading).

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. "It was a quiet morning at the Critter Café. / The cook was dozing in his cheese soufflé." The day's idyll is shattered when a busload of poorly behaved creatures invade the restaurant ("Raccoons crawled atop their chairs. / Cow skateboarded down the stairs"). Finally, the fed-up waiter kicks them all out--or so he thinks. Mixed-media illustrations depict the delicious pandemonium.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Long ago, witches tiptoed when they went "spooking and spelling." When old witch Druscilla's creaky knees rob her of her silent, stealthlike approach, she concocts an innovative spell that changes a common broomstick into a perfect flying machine. Appropriately quirky and shadowy illustrations add spooky and humorous flair to the Halloween tale.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. Emily, a very serious girl, meets a very silly duck. She somehow manages to suppress her smile whenever she sees the juggling, socks-wearing creature; only when she spots the fowl in his polka-dotted underwear does Emily lighten up and laugh. The simply told tale is enhanced by its fairly restrained illustrations of the sweet-faced Emily and the affably daffy duck.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. After the vacation-bound Petersons drive away, their house heads for the beach. Davies's kooky premise and characters are brought to life in White's spirited oil-paint and colored-pencil illustrations. Oddball scenes, such as the house stuck in traffic, ably support the pun-filled text. Some of the wordplay may not register with youngsters, but that doesn't detract from the story's absurd humor.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Lee White. The Macintosh family's prize-winning rooster, Brewster, begins to crow at odd times of the day, disrupting their activities. Everyone's stumped until little Julie realizes that Brewster needs glasses. There's a lot of build-up, but the solution is abrupt and the rhymed text doesn't always scan. Sunny and busy caricature illustrations display unexpected angles and varied perspectives.
