Reflecting Hughes's powerful words, Smith's sepia-tone photographs depict African Americans across generations. Aged, toil-worn hands represent the past, a mother with child holds onto the present, and hopeful youths look ahead into the future. Text and visuals seamlessly acclaim: "Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people." Poetry for all ages and peoples.

Employing sports as a metaphor for life, Smith illustrates Kipling's poem with impressive photographs of young male athletes. The photographs (some a bit fuzzy) use distinctive lighting and perspectives for drama.

The poems strive to capture the essence of being a dog: "Oh boy! Oh boy! / ... Another day has arrived / just for me!" The color photos are laid out with the occasionally boldfaced text in such a way that some pages look cluttered.
