Barton retells Gallico's short story of a boy determined to do whatever it takes to heal his sick donkey. The retelling is much abbreviated but uses some of the original text and maintains the spirit of the original tale. The flat, simplified art with its gold, green, and brown tones gives the reader a strong sense of the Italian setting.

The higher the snowdrifts and the lower the temperature, the more it pays to be compassionate. Overall, the stories exude good will and a sense of respect for the often wondrous and mysterious landscape, a regard heightened by Marton's stark, wintry oil pastel pictures.
