Letters, e-mails, and newspaper articles recall what may have happened during a mysterious Halloween night "attack" in the woods. Emmet (now confined to a mental health facility), his sister Niki, and their neighbor Doug serve as intriguingly unreliable narrators in a story that may be about shapeshifting or may be about madness. Unfortunately, the novel's fascinating premise is damaged by an over-the-top conclusion.
