In this fictionalized account, white New Yorker Duvy (the book's author as a boy) tells about his father's frequent trips to the South as a lawyer for the NAACP in the 1960s. Through the eyes of Dorothy, an African American woman, readers learn about historical details beyond Duvy's experiences. The writing is overly expository. Footnotes throughout help clarify events but are distracting.
