(4) 4-6 Illustrated by Ian Beck. Clumsy stable boy Ned, who can communicate with animals, loves beautiful Princess Bella from afar. When Bella is captured by a dragon, Ned rushes to the rescue. Some clunky prose and a warmed-over plot contribute little. More successful are Beck's lovely silhouette illustrations, which do a more imaginative job telling the story.
