In this book based on the true story of ten-year-old Charlotte Haines, who lived in 1783 New York, her stubborn, fiercely patriotic father banishes her after she sneaks off to bid Loyalist cousins good-bye. She ends up exiled to the Nova Scotia wilderness along with them, never to see her immediate family again. Odd details and an abrupt ending, along with static illustrations, detract somewhat from the fascinating story.
