Anna goes to China in 1989 to study art. After falling in love with Chenxi, she gets involved with a group of activist students. The story culminates with the Tiananmen Square massacre. Chenxi and Anna's relationship (complete with unplanned pregnancy) progresses too quickly to be believable. However, the book is useful for its portrait of a place and time.
