Flying Lessons

(3) 4-6 In this story set in the thirties, LaMarr Conroy, an Amelia Earhart fan, is sent to live with her uncle and aunt after her mother is lost in a plane crash. Aunt Millie disapproves of the illegitimate, somewhat uncouth girl; and Uncle Vital just seems to pity her. The lush and laid-back first-person southern storytelling masks a certain diffuseness of plot. While not Matthew's most unified work, this is beautifully written and emotionally resonant.
