Mercedes McDonald.
This graceful volume should supplant Oh, the Places You'll Go! as the inspirational picture book for people into that sort of thing. Harjo's poem begins with a daughter's birth surrounded by loving relatives. It then acknowledges life's vicissitudes and dispenses advice: "Bury what needs to be buried. / Laugh easily at yourself..." McDonald's vibrant, dreamlike illustrations are rich in Native American imagery.
